New business models for digestate value extraction and nutrients circultation

We explore new business models to maximise the value of digestate and promote the recycling of nutrients. Through interviews with various actors along the value chain, the project aims to identify key changes needed for more sustainable and profitable management of digestate.

As biogas production in Sweden increases, the volume of digestate will rise at the same pace. Strategically, this can contribute to the supply of domestically produced fertiliser to agriculture, including in regions without access to livestock manure. At the same time, other sectors are also interested in making their products more sustainable and climate‑neutral.

This creates potential for developing innovative ways of managing the resources contained in digestate. In this research project, we examine how business models for digestate can be transformed.

  • What role do different actors have – or could they have – in increasing the value of digestate?
  • How can formal and informal collaborations between different actors be developed to improve the business opportunities associated with digestate?

During the first half of 2024, we are conducting interviews with a wide range of actors active along the digestate value chain – producers, product developers, intermediaries and customers – to identify the changes needed to achieve sustainable and more profitable management of digestate resources

The results will be presented here, so you are welcome to return.
