The Next-2Digits project is developing novel wafer-scale integration technologies for 2D materials (2DM) to advance the next generation of photonic and optoelectronic integrated circuits (PICs & OEICs). By leveraging the unique properties of graphene and other 2D materials, the project aims to improve performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency in optical sensing technologies.
Key objectives include:
- Developing a PIC platform for direct integration of 2DM-based photodetectors and modulators.
- Establishing additive wafer-scale integration of graphene.
- Fabricating and testing 2DM-based components in three real-world use cases (TRL5).
Beyond technical advances, Next-2Digits supports European industry by reducing production costs, power consumption, and device footprint, making high-performance 2DM-based components more accessible. The project aligns with the EU’s vision for graphene as a Future Emerging Technology and contributes to strengthening European innovation and value chains.
The project is a collaboration among 11 universities and companies, led by the National Technical University of Athens. Environmental Change (TEMA M), Linköping University, plays a key role in testing the developed devices in environmental settings, ensuring their practical applicability.
