The purpose of the employment is that the assistant professor is to be given the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the research and teaching qualifications required for employment as associate professor.
The Department of Media and Information Technology is now seeking an Assistant Professor with a background in media and information technology for a full-time position. The department conducts both basic and applied research and is involved in several major research collaborations. The research at the department has resulted in several successful products that are now on the market. The Department of Media and Information Technology also hosts research within the Visualization Center C, where both technical and didactic research and development are important elements. The department is led by Professor Anders Ynnerman and belongs to the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The research and educational environment at the department is characterized by close collaboration with industry, providing a dynamic context for teaching.
The position will be located at the Unit for Visual Media Communication. The unit conducts interdisciplinary research in visual media communication, visual culture, visual representation, and research communication but aims to deepen and broaden its research profile. The unit also teaches the Bachelor's program in Graphic Design and Communication. At the department level, there are several engineering programs where teaching may occur. As an Assistant Professor in Visual Media Communication, you will teach at both undergraduate and advanced levels in Swedish and English and supervise students in various programs within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The work includes course design and course responsibility. To contribute meaningfully to research and pedagogical work, we work on campus and expect you to work on-site.
In this position, you will conduct research in human-computer interaction with a particular focus on immersive visual analysis, focusing on virtual reality, 3D user interfaces and spatial interaction, spatio-temporal data visualization, and urban data and climate visualization. You will be part of a growing research environment and are expected to lead projects that align with the unit's profile. The Unit for Visual Media Communication collaborates closely with the Visualization Center C, which means that science communication in public environments is a natural part of the unit's research focus.
You are active in the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through academic publications and help attract external research funding.
You actively contribute to the university's development work. Your work includes keeping up with national and international developments in your field and other societal developments that are relevant to your work.
You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as self-evident in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimum way and enjoy your working community.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, we are looking for someone who has obtained their doctoral degree within the last five years.
For this position, equal weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical skills.
Regarding pedagogical skills, the following will be assessed:

- Experience in designing, planning, conducting, and examining courses.
- Experience in supervising students in projects.
Particularly meritorious for the position:
- Experience in teaching scientific theories and methods.
- Experience in teaching web development.
- Experience in teaching data/information visualization.
- Experience in teaching cross-media design/production.
- Experience in teaching document production.
- Experience in collaborating with other teachers.
Regarding scientific skills, the following will be assessed:
Requirements for the position:
- Doctoral degree in computer and information science, or in related/equivalent fields.
Particularly meritorious for the position:
- Experience in publishing in scientific journals.
- Experience in working in interdisciplinary research groups.
- Experience in working independently and collaborating with other researchers.
- Experience in working on research projects in collaboration with municipalities and/or industry.
- Experience in writing research proposals.
Other skills that will be assessed for this position:
Particularly meritorious:
- Excellent programming skills such as JavaScript, C#, and HTML/CSS.
- Excellent knowledge of software engines and frameworks such as Unity, Node, and D3.
- Excellent knowledge of immersive HCI technologies such as HTC Vive, Leap Motion, Meta Quest/Oculus Rift.
Meritorious:
- Good communication skills.
- Experience in working in teams and contributing to a collegial work climate.
- Good ability to structure, plan, organize, and prioritize work effectively.
- Ability to actively participate in the work community and share knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the workgroup.
Since teaching and research are conducted in both Swedish and English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in both languages.
The workplace
The position is located at the Unit for Visual Media Communication, part of the Department of Media and Information Technology. We belong to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and our workplace is beautifully situated by the Motala River in central Norrköping.
The employment
The length of employment for this position is four years, full time.
Starting date by agreement.
An assistant professor may be employed until further notice, for a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years, as determined by the institution of higher education before the employment begins. The employment may be renewed, by a maximum period of two years, if, as a consequence of sick absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the assistant professor, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.
An assistant professor shall, after application, be promoted to associate professor if he/she is qualified for employment as associate professor and has been assessed following a test to be suitable for such employment according to the grounds for assessment that the University has determined.
