Back to available jobsWe are now looking for a curious and driven Postdoc in Education with a specialisation in Digital Humanities who is interested in working with unique historical material and contributing to new knowledge about the role of the Swedish folk high school in society from 1868 to the present day.
Work assignments
As a Postdoc in Education with a specialisation in digital humanities, you will work in the research programme The Folk high School as Mirrors of Society: Sociological Perspectives on the Educational Offerings of Folk High Schools 1868-2018. The work involves contributing to the development of the project’s digital infrastructure and analysing the Swedish folk high school based on large-scale data. You will have the opportunity to develop and apply data-driven methods, handle large digital archives, develop visualisation solutions and contribute to the research programme’s infrastructure.
The position offers good opportunities to build merit in a growing interdisciplinary field at the intersection of educational history, digital humanities and sociological analysis. You are expected to be actively present in the research environment, develop research networks and contribute to a vibrant intellectual climate.
As Postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
Qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as Postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.
It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.
We are looking for someone with:
- A doctoral degree in digital humanities, education, sociology of education, history of education, sociology of literature or in closely related research fields that the employer deems equivalent.
- Good reading and language comprehension in Swedish, as well as good knowledge of English.
It is an advantage if you have:
- Experience of working with large text or image materials, for example organising digital archives, curating public databases, structuring and quality-assuring large amounts of text and image data.
- Scientific production of high international quality within the research programme’s scope.
- Good knowledge of popular education (folkbildning), history of education, social movements, civil society organizations and folk high schools.

The workplace
You will work at the Division of Education and Adult Learning (PVL) in a research project led by Senior Associate Professor Erik Nylander.
The employment
This employment is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The employment is full-time.
