We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting challenges of today. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are now looking for a PhD student in infrainformatics with focus on semantic and goal-oriented communication specialized on cloud-assisted artificial intelligence and control systems.

Your work assignments

You will work in the ELLIIT funded project “Safety-Critical Intelligent Machines with Cloud-Assisted AI and Control”. This project focuses on safety-critical intelligent machines, e.g. collaborative robots, rescue drones, or vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems, with cloud-assisted AI and control systems. A main challenge in all cloud-assisted AI and control systems is to deliver the right and significant piece of information to the right point of computation (or actuation) at the correct moment in time. To address this challenge, you will focus on developing theoretical and algorithmic foundations for goal-oriented, semantics-aware communication enabling timely and reliable cloud-to-agent interactions. For more details on semantic communications see our review paper entitled “Semantic Communications in Networked Systems: A Data Significance Perspective” published in IEEE Network, vol. 36, July/August 2022.

The project is part of a collaboration between Linköping University and Lund University.  Therefore, the research will be carried out in collaboration with Professor Maria Kihl, Department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, and within ELLIIT.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.

Your qualifications

For this position we are looking for someone who have completed a degree at Master’s level in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics, with a minimum of 240 credits of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics. Alternatively, you have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in another way.

You must demonstrate strong mathematical maturity and also possess good programming skills. Furthermore it is important that you have good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

It is important that you are able to work independently, are goal-oriented, and have strong problem-solving skills. Furthermore you should also be clear in your communication and able to collaborate effectively with others.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Your workplace

You will belong to the Department of Science and Technology (ITN) which is known for its activities in logistics, visualization and organic electronics. We combine academic height with fruitful collaboration with the surrounding society. The position belongs to the division of Communication and Transport Systems (KTS), which is one of the largest environments for research and education in the transport area in the Nordic countries. The operations are conducted within the units Traffic Systems, Quantitative Logistics, Flight logistics, Rail and Public Transport, Mobile Telecommunications, Construction Logistics and Construction Technology. The research is mainly externally funded and is carried out in close collaboration with industry, authorities and society. In undergraduate education, we are responsible for six education programs.

The position is placed in the Mobile Telecommunications unit. You will be funded by and will join ELLIIT (Excellence Center at Linköping – Lund in Information Technology), a research environment within the government-funded strategic research area in IT and Mobile Communications.
