PhD position in Environmental Technology and Management
Back to available jobsWe are seeking a PhD Candidate in Environmental Technology and Management to join the Department of Management and Engineering.
Your work assignments
Manufacturing companies are shifting from traditional linear production logics toward more sustainable and circular operating models. A key component of this transition is the integration of remanufacturing, a value‑retaining industrial process which extends the lifecycle of products and parts. Remanufacturing can be integrated with new manufacturing or be located in separate facilities.
You will take part in two ongoing research projects where Swedish manufacturing companies and other researchers are participating. Within the ROAR-project we are exploring how manufacturing industries develop and improve their remanufacturing of products and components. Within the second research project called Innovate Remanufacturing we are investigating different technologies that can innovate and improve remanufacturing at some Swedish companies. More information about the research projects can be found at:
https://liu.se/en/research/resource-efficient-and-resilient-recirculation-of-products-and-components

You will focus on strategic, operational, and supply‑chain‑related challenges associated with manufacturing companies’ transition toward closed‑loop production systems (CLPS). Within the research projects, your responsibilities will include supporting project researchers in conducting theoretical and empirical studies, performing analyses, and further developing collected data. Your focus will be on investigating manufacturers’ opportunities for expanded remanufacturing businesses, mainly from an economic sustainability perspective. You are expected to independently, and in collaboration with others, carry out data analyses, and document these analyses in writing and present results both orally and in written form. Additional tasks include compiling and processing theoretical and empirical material, as well as developing case studies, designing interviews and methods/models/frameworks for Swedish manufacturing companies.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in (including ongoing education, master thesis defense summer 2026) in Sustainability Engineering and Management (SUS), Industrial Engineering and Management (IND), or Mechanical Engineering (MEC) or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in [%Ange ev inriktning/ämne]. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
It is particularly advantageous to have good knowledge of manufacturing, production economics, as well as solid understanding of sustainable and circular strategies.
You should have good knowledge of scientific methods and be able to work practically with (1) collecting and managing research data in a systematic manner, (2) structuring and analyzing collected data, (3) developing interview questions, (4) analyzing interview material, and (5) reporting results both orally and in writing.
Proficiency in English is a requirement for the position, good knowledge of Swedish is a merit. A clear and documented interest in sustainable/circular manufacturing is a merit.
