This project investigates the surface integrity issues, such as residual stresses, plastic deformation and microstructural changes, that might be created during machining or other surface treatments for example shot peening, of nickel-based superalloys. Also the effect of thermal exposure on surface integrity is investigated. Fatigue behavior is studied with regard to the different surface conditions. The project will give a better understanding of fatigue failures in gas turbines from the point of view of surface integrity.
