The Division of Philosophy and Applied Ethics (FTE) is an internationally competitive, interdisciplinary center for cutting-edge research in philosophy with strengths in philosophy of science, phenomenology, normative and applied ethics, metaethics, and political philosophy. With three full professors, three senior associate professors, several senior lecturers and active PhD students as well as an ongoing research seminar series with presenters from all over the world, FTE provides a lively and supportive research atmosphere for future PhD students.

Doctoral studies are typically fully funded for at least four years of study. Calls for applications are posted on this website and on international platforms on a regular basis.

FTE offers courses at all levels in most main areas of philosophy, from history of philosophy over logic, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, moral and political philosophy, metaphysics to applied ethics and philosophy of science. Regular teaching also includes PhD courses at the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

FTE engages in numerous interdisciplinary collaborations at local, national, and international levels. Faculty members have worked with, among others, the Departments of Theoretical Physics at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the University at Albany, SUNY, as well as Departments of Philosophy at Stanford University, San Francisco State University, University of Trento, Stockholm University, Umeå University, and Lund University. Members of FTE also cooperate closely with other departments and divisions of LiU such as the Division of Aging and Social Change (ASC), the Center for Medical Humanities, the Quantum Information Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering, the National Centre for Priorities in Health at the Medical Faculty as well as the Norrköping Visualization Center. These collaborations create excellent placement opportunities on the national and international job market for our PhD students.
