I work at Barnard College, Columbia University in the Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies department, in New York. I have worked there for 18 years, ten years as departmental chair and in other directorial positions at the University. I teach about gender and power, political economy and culture, globalisation, empire, colonialism, nationalism, and gender.
I have published four of my own single-authored books, the latest of which is entitled Remaindered Life (2022). I have been the Co-Editor of the international journal, Social Text, and remain a member of its editorial collective. I have spearheaded the foundation of institutional programs in race and ethnic studies and Asian diaspora studies at Barnard College and helped to establish a research center for the study of social difference at Columbia University.
I am also in charge of an independent community library in the Philippines, a kind of a cultural centre that organizes talks, exhibitions, film screenings, and art workshops. As the founding director of the library, I have organized many cultural programs and have also published books by local authors.
