Special needs education

Special needs education is a multidisciplinary area of knowledge which takes perspectives, theories and methods from fields such as pedagogy, psychology, sociology, disability research, cognitive science and communication sciences. The field of special needs education focuses on the theory, knowledge building and learning as well as on organisation and activities.

Special needs education studies the opportunities and obstacles that can arise in learning and development. Its focus is on the pedagogical and didactical challenges presented by differences and variations in the meeting between children and pupils. This applies especially to the children and pupils who pedagogically and socially challenge the school and/or are defined as in need of special support.

Linköping University has a long tradition of special needs education and research. The research focuses on didactics and special needs education, reading and writing difficulties, inclusion and special needs groups, neuropsychological disabilities, groups and group processes, bullying, issues of values, conflict management, adult learners with disabilities and adults with difficulties with written language.

Research into the areas of “Pedagogy with specialisation in basic reading, writing and maths skills” and “Pedagogy with specialisation in social interaction and matters of values in school and education” contributes to the development of special needs education in terms of opportunities and hindrances for both written language and mathematical development and learning.
