More information

Notification of public defence

When the supervisor and doctoral student start planning for the thesis defence, the principal supervisor should contact the faculty programme director (charlotta.einarsson@liu.se) to check that the desired date and time for the defence is available. A preliminary booking of time for the defence should be made before contacting the suggested faculty-appointed opponent and the members of the examining committee.

When there is a date for the public defence and proposals for a faculty opponent, chair of the public defence and members of the examining committee, it is time to submit a notification of the public defence to the faculty. Public defence notifications are processed by the Research Programmes Board at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and should be received at least two months before the planned public defence and no later than two weeks before the board's next meeting.

Criteria for who may be appointed as an faculty-opponent and member of the examining committee are stated in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences: Guidelines for a doctoral thesis defence.

Notification of public defence can be made by using a specific form and sending it to the secretary of the research programmes board (charlotta.einarsson@liu.se).

Notification of licentitate seminar

When the supervisor and licentiate begin planning for the presentation of the licentiate thesis, the main supervisor must submit a notification of the presentation of the licentiate thesis to the head of department. The notification is made on a special form.

More detailed instructions on the presentation of the licentiate thesis can be found in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences: Guidelines for the submission of a licentiate thesis.

Posting ("Spikning")

The doctoral thesis is to be posted no later than three weeks before the public defence.

  1. Book a meeting with the dean. To book the meeting, please contact Thomas Wise (thomas.wise@liu.se) well in advance. Sometimes, one of the pro-deans may take the meeting. The meeting is a short discussion about the doctoral thesis.

  2. When an appointment with the dean has been confirmed, the doctoral student contacts the registrar at LiU (registrator@liu.se) to book the posting of the thesis. The registrar confirms the booking and informs the University Library of the date and time. The library contacts the doctoral student and offers the opportunity to hold a posting presentation in connection with the posting in Studenthuset.
  1. The doctoral student* sends five copies of the thesis to the University Library. Copies are also sent to the doctoral student’s home department to the amount that the department has decided on. When these copies have been submitted to the University Library and the department, digital receipts will be sent to the registrar. Two copies of the thesis should also be sent to the Dean’s Office (Thomas Wise), but this will not generate a digital receipt.

  2. For the meeting with the dean, the doctoral student brings the copy of the thesis that is to be posted in Studenthuset. After the meeting the dean writes on the thesis that it may be posted.

  3. The doctoral student* visits the registrar in the D Building at the appointed time. The registrar labels the thesis with an arrival date and gives it a registration number. The registrar then refers the doctoral student to Studenthuset for the posting, and registers the thesis.

  4. The doctoral student* posts the thesis on the posting tree in Studenthuset, preferably directly after the visit to the registrar. If the student has prepared a posting presentation, this is given together with the posting.

*If the doctoral student does not have the possibility to come to LiU to submit or post the thesis, a representative may take his or her part in this process. It is the doctoral student’s responsibility to contact a representative and to make sure that these steps are carried out.
