At Linköping University the main academic tradition is the Academic Ceremony, which takes place once a year. On this occasion, doctors are conferred and professors are inaugurated.

The 2024 Academic celebration will take place on 31 may - 1 June

The Academic Celebration at Linköping University includes the Doctoral Promotion and Installation of Professors which takes place once a year. This is when new doctors receive their insignia and new professors are installed. The 2024 Academic Celebration will take place on 31 May - 1 June.

Academic Gala Concert at 7 pm in Crusellhallen, Linköping Konsert & Kongress. Everybody is welcome!

June 1

Conferment Ceremony at 4 pm in Crusellhallen, Linköping Konsert & Kongress. Everybody is welcome!

Faculty of Arts and Sciences honorary doctorate lecture - Creating ecosystems for inspired learning

9.00 am – 10.00 am Key 1, Key Building, Campus Valla, Linköping

Honorary Doctor Seetha Murty, Director of Education at Silver Oaks International Schools in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam in India, talks about her personal journey, her collaboration with LiU and how we can achieve a sustainable society by building common values in school education. The lecture "Creating ecosystems for inspired learning. A School leader’s mission for a sustainable society." will be given in English.

Faculty of Science and Engineering honorary doctorate lectures - a Nobel laureate and an astronaut

10.00 am – 12.00 pm C4, C Building, Campus Valla, Linköping

Quantum entanglement: from foundations to applications and back. Anton Zeilinger, Professor Emeritus at University of Vienna and 2022 Nobel Laureate in Physics. The lecture will be given in English. Perspectives – an astronaut’s reflections beyond Earth and the journey there. Marcus Wandt, astronaut at ESA, chief test pilot at Saab and fighter pilot. He has participated in research projects within the framework of LiU:s partnership with Saab. The lecture will be given in Swedish. Live-streamed event.

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences honorary doctorate lecture - A Short History of Child Abuse Pediatrics

10.00 am – 11.00 am Hugo Theorell, Campus US, Linköping

The modern era of child abuse pediatrics began in the mid twentieth century. The ensuing decades have brought many advances, but significant challenges - including the emergence of denialism - threaten the future health and safety of children. Professor Cindy W. Christian will discuss the history of the field of child abuse pediatrics and highlight future opportunities and challenges. The lecture will be given in English.

The academic gala concert: A window to our future

7.00 pm – 9.00 pm Linköping Konsert & Kongress, Crusellhallen

This year’s Academic Gala Concert sends us through a window into a children’s world with the help of exciting classical music, games, dolls and Harry Potter. Childhood is examined in a playful way and we get to look back at our own childhood. Linköping Academic Orchestra and Linnea, Linköping University’s women’s choir, offer humour, warmth and joy!

The solemn Doctoral Promotion and Installation of Professors Ceremony is traditionally held once a year. Following the installation of new professors, the university confers awards and sometimes medals to people who have made important contributions for Linköping University. The doctoral promotion takes place one faculty at a time, and is carried out by a conferrer appointed by the faculty. New doctors and honorary doctors receive symbols of their dignity in the form of insignia, i.e. a hat or a laurel wreath, a diploma and sometimes a ring.

Indian principal Seetha Murty has worked with children’s and young people’s learning throughout her professional life. American professor Cindy W. Christian has devoted her career to developing the care of abused children.

An astronaut and a Nobel laureate are new honorary doctors at LiU

The Swedish astronaut Marcus Wandt and the Austrian quantum physicist and Nobel laureate Anton Zeilinger have been appointed honorary doctors at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Linköping University.

LiU’s first jubilee doctors will be honoured at the Academic Celebration

This year’s annual Academic Celebration, on 26–27 May 2023, will have a new feature. As the very first Academic Ceremony in Linköping took place in 1973, LiU will now, for the first time, be able to award the title of jubilee doctor.

Every third year the ceremony takes place in Norrköping.

Another academic traditions at Linköping University are graduation ceremonies, which confer Bachelor and Master's degrees, at the Faculty of Technology Sciences.
