We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are now looking for a PhD student to the Division of Electronics and Computer Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY).

Your work assignments

The main focus of the project is research, development, and design of integrated brain-inspired neuromorphic computing systems on chip. The goal is to generate new knowledge and to create state-of-the-art hardware platform solutions for design of energy-efficient computing and signal processing systems for a wide range of future applications in AI and biomedical systems. The project is expected to demonstrate innovative neuromorphic systems solutions to be designed in advanced CMOS and possibly other semiconductor technologies, measured, verified, and published in top international journals and conferences in the field.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Electronics Engineering or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in the above given subject. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time the employment decision is finalized, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.

Furthermore, the applicant is expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrate documented strong background knowledge and skills in design of digital and analog integrated circuits in advanced CMOS technologies, as well as good background knowledge in computer architectures and signal processing systems.
  • Have good knowledge and practical skills in circuit design, circuit simulations, and circuit layout using professional computer aided circuit design tools, as well as good knowledge in circuit board design and measurement of integrated circuits.

Additionally, strong communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required. While good knowledge in Swedish is not a formal requirement, it will be regarded as an additional advantage.

Your workplace

The research work will be performed at the Division of Electronics and Computer Engineering (formerly known as the Division of Integrated Circuits and Systems, https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/isy/eks) at the Department of Electrical Engineering in Linköping University. The group has more than 40 years of experience in design of advanced integrated circuits, and in close collaboration with major semiconductor companies and academic research organizations worldwide. In addition, the division conducts undergraduate and graduate education in the field.

The division is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering, read more about the department here: https://liu.se/en/article/open-positions-at-isy.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
