We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a PhD student in Mathematical Sciences within the Research School in Interdisciplinary Mathematics.

Your work assignments

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your research project will be within the Research School in Interdisciplinary Mathematics, with main supervisor at the Department of Mathematics and an external assistant supervisor, and you will have the opportunity to develop, analyze and implement advanced mathematics in the borderland between theory and applications. There are four projects to choose from:

Project 1: Robust optimization for treatment planning of radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is a common modality for cancer treatment and mathematical optimization is an important tool for treatment planning. There are several uncertainties, for example regarding tumour contours, and this project aims at developing mathematical models and algorithms to take uncertainties into account and mitigate the effect from them. Our group has ongoing cooperations internationally and nationally and with industry.

Project 2: Optimized production planning for hydropower plants. In close collaboration with the R&D department at Vattenfall AB, the project aims at extending the currently used optimization models for planning the hydropower production in Sweden. The project will focus on introducing stochasticity into the existing models, hence exploring the area of robust and stochastic optimization. Among other things, such stochastic models enable more accurate forecasts and allow for seasonal planning with expected market prices.

Project 3: Advanced decision making under uncertain data. The project aims to protect the operation of modern power systems against the effects of uncertain data, that occur due to natural uncertainties, such as fluctuations in wind and solar power, or human-made uncertainties, e.g. cyber-attacks. To this end, we explore the mathematical areas of distributional robustness and the interplay between AI and optimization, and collaborate with the power system unit at RISE - the Research Institutes of Sweden in order to ensure the practical impact of potential project outcomes.

Project 4: Statistical modelling and predicting cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity. The project aims to develop statistical and mathematical models for predicting and identifying risk factors for cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT) among child, adolescents, and young cancer survivors by using and comparing real-world clinical data from large longitudinal datasets. Machine learning techniques and modern (multivariate) statistics for big data will be used to gain insights into contributing risk factors for CTR-CVT.

In your application, please rank the different projects in order of interest. Clearly indicate which project/projects that you are most interested in.

You will have the opportunity to develop mentorship skills by supervising bachelor and master students. Your doctoral employment also includes participating and presenting your research at national and international workshops and conferences.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in mathematics or applied mathematics or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in mathematics or applied mathematics. These 60 credits must include independent work of least 30 credits in mathematics or applied mathematics. Alternatively, you have gained corresponding knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time the employment decision is finalized, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.

You must be driven, ambitious and you want to strive for continuous development. We expect you to have a strong interest in the research area. You must enjoy academic challenges and be motivated to acquire new knowledge and carry out research work. You are expected to be able to work independently, have the ability to take your own initiative, and have good cooperation skills.

A strong ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, is a requirement.

Your workplace

You will be employed at the Department of Mathematics in one of the divisions Algebra, geometry and discrete mathematics or Applied mathematics. This provides an international working environment where you will carry out teaching and research tasks with individuals from all over the world.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.

Salary and employment benefits
