We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting challenges of today. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a research engineer within the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA) at the Department of Computer and Information Science. In this position, you will have the opportunity to work on a collaborative, interdisciplinary project between computer science and materials science that aims to make drying process of wood more sustainable.

The position

As a research engineer for machine learning in materials science, you will work in close collaboration with members of the WASP-WISE pilot project on predicting moisture content in timber drying using machine learning. The role involves contributing to this research project with a focus on model development, implementation, and testing. Further tasks involve dataset curation, analyzing results, and the creation of visualizations and presentations of research findings.

The person we need

You have graduated at Bachelor’s or Master’s level in machine learning, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related area that is considered relevant for the research topic of the project.

A successful candidate should have excellent study results and a strong background in mathematics. The applicant should be skilled at implementing new models and algorithms in Python, with documented experience in PyTorch. The applicant should be knowledgeable with neural networks and furthermore have a strong drive towards performing fundamental research; the ability and interest to work collaboratively and interdisciplinary; and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. In addition, the applicant should have strong communication skills and should be able to communicate freely in oral and written English.

It will be considered a merit if the applicant has worked on materials science, with data from X-ray computed tomography (XCT) scanners, or has experience with optimization algorithms and with improving the efficiency of computational methods.

The workplace

Linköping University is one of the leading AI institutions in Sweden. We have strong links to prominent national research initiatives, such as WASP and ELLIIT. You will have access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure for machine learning, e.g., through Berzelius.

The position is based at the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA) within the Department of Computer and Information Science. At STIMA we conduct research and education in both statistics and machine learning, at the undergraduate, advanced and PhD levels. We regularly publish solid contributions at the best machine learning conferences. STIMA is characterized by a modern view of the statistical subject, where probabilistic models are combined with computational algorithms to solve challenging complex problems, as well as a statistical view of machine learning which clearly integrates the two subject areas within the division.

The project will be carried out in a collaboration between STIMA (main supervisor: Sebastian Mair) and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Applied Mechanics at Uppsala University (co-supervisor: Sara Florisson) through a WASP-WISE pilot project. The project will also employ a research assistant as Uppsala University, focusing on the applied aspects of the project, whereas the focus for the advertised position is on the machine learning method development. We will strive for a tight collaboration between the groups, including regular meetings and research visits. As a research engineer in this project, you are expected to actively engage in the teamwork and contribute to this collaboration.
