This research is based on embodied cognition and – more specifically – on the theory of conceptual metaphors.

The focus is on identifying, characterising, and describing conceptual metaphors within the framework of natural sciences instruction, especially thermodynamics and heat transfer. Furthermore, in close collaboration with Jesper Haglund at Uppsala University and Konrad Schönborn at the Department of Science and Technology, we have – as part of the research project – also developed a series of classroom and laboratory exercises involving thermal cameras in natural sciences instruction. By means of the immediate visual feedback the heat camera provides, it is now possible for learners to anchor their experiences of heat-related phenomena in concrete, sense-based experience.
