Language, tools and representations in learning in the natural sciences

Learning in the natural sciences does not happen in a vacuum, but rather always by means of physical and mental tools such as concepts, metaphors, diagrams, pictures, laboratory equipment, NTA (Science and Technology for All) kits or animations.

This research area focusses on these tools and representations and what opportunities for learning science they present. We also examine how new types of tools change learning in the natural sciences in and of itself.

Creating animations - a new way to learn chemistry?

The aim of this project is to investigate how the learning of chemistry by teacher training students is boosted by the students, together in a group, creating their own animations to explain chemical phenomena.

Experience-based learning in natural sciences instruction

This research is based on embodied cognition and – more specifically – on the theory of conceptual metaphors.
