Carina Hjelm

Associate Professor, Docent

I wish to inspire patient-oriented research, develop healthcare, and conduct clinical research that also benefits education and training.

Presentation

I work with various forms of teaching for nurses, specialist training, and in the medical program.

Teaching and Work

My main tasks are in the nursing programs in various terms and for specialist training for nurses. I am responsible for courses in the specialist nursing program for nurses in intensive care and assistant course manager in the nursing program in term 6. My work also includes Clinicum (LIU) as a simulation educator. This involves interprofessional learning/simulation and teamwork in practical situations for students at the Faculty of Medicine in various programs (nurses in different terms, specialist nurses, medical program, etc.). Supervise and examine theses at undergraduate and advanced levels.

Member of the following groups

  • The innovative Cardiac Arrest REsearch group (iCARE)
The goal of iCARE is to conduct research aimed at improving the care and management of individuals who suffer cardiac arrest, both in and out of hospital, as well as their relatives and survivors. The research covers the entire chain of survival, from preventive measures and early alert to follow-up and rehabilitation. To achieve innovative and clinically relevant research projects of high scientific quality, various research methods are combined with an interdisciplinary approach. The development and implementation of research projects are carried out in close collaboration with clinics and patient organizations.

  • CESAR network
CESAR is a group of researchers working towards collaboration and exchange within Swedish cardiovascular care and academic research. The main goal of CESAR is to increase collaboration in the field of cardiovascular care between researchers in the regions of Jönköping, Kalmar, Linköping, and Norrköping. CESAR started in 2011 and plans several activities within the research field.

  • Collaboration
Participates in a national research network within Intensive Care for PhD nurses - FIVA.
Serves on the board of a national network for Teachers in Intensive Care.

Research

Research Group for Frail, Critically Ill Patients

FrailBrain

The results are expected to increase knowledge about patients’ physical and mental well-being before and after heart surgery. The questionnaires can collectively reflect the health status of frail heart surgery patients and how we can provide additional support to these patients.
We are a group of researchers with clinically active nurses and researchers at LIU who are looking at this patient group after heart surgery

FrailHealth

It is crucial to study the signs and symptoms exhibited by these patients with severe HAI (Healthcare-Associated Infections) and the characteristics and diagnoses these patients have. The vigilant care provided by nurses is of great importance for the early identification of signs and symptoms of ongoing severe HAI, especially sepsis.
I am the assistant supervisor for PhD student Sebastian Geijer with the project title “Identifying vital signs and symptoms to develop and implement an evidence-based PDM protocol (Early Detection of Infection Scale in Intensive Care, EDICU) for the early detection of suspected infection in critically ill patients in a surgical context.”

FrailHeart

Cognitive problems increase with age, making this group of survivors likely more vulnerable than younger cardiac arrest survivors and therefore in greater need of identification. • I am the assistant supervisor for PhD student Karin Steel with the project title “Cognitive Function and Health in Cardiac Arrest Survivors.”

FrailSleep

Sleep problems are common among cardiac arrest survivors and did not improve after two years of follow-up. Relatives of cardiac arrest survivors also experience sleep-related issues. It is therefore important to screen for insomnia problems so they can be identified and treated. • I am the assistant supervisor for PhD student Patrik Hellström (Linné University, Kalmar) with the project title “The Impact of Sleep on Health and Quality of Life after Cardiac Arrest.
