I am an interdisciplinary researcher exploring the complexity of societal transitions by integrating economic theories and social perspectives to understand the multifaceted challenges of sustainable development and decision-making.

Current Projects

Urban and peri-urban food systems intersect with key areas such as waste management, food security, urban planning, and broader sustainability objectives. As urban expansion encroaches on fertile agricultural lands, peri-urban spaces and local food systems have become critical for urban planners. However, the current land-use market often prioritizes commercial development over food production, largely because the ecosystem services these lands provide remain undervalued. This challenge is further compounded by the fragile business models of peri-urban commercial farming, which struggle to compete in such markets.
My research interests lie in adopting an interdisciplinary approach to explore the economic and social dimensions of sustainable transitions. Building on my previous work, which highlighted the lack of economic valuation for recycled nutrients, my current project proposal focuses on the pressures of growing urban populations on agricultural lands. I aim to investigate and evaluate potential nutrient recycling practices within peri-urban areas and develop strategies to value and promote these practices. This involves conducting surveys and interviews with key stakeholders, including local governments, urban planners, farmers, and residents.
The project seeks to achieve two main objectives: first, to create a valuation framework that accounts for environmental, economic, and social factors in nutrient recycling; and second, to integrate this knowledge into urban planning and market practices to better support sustainable nutrient management.

Biogas markets from a regional perspective

Biogas provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, fostering circularity and local economic growth. Despite its potential, Sweden’s biogas market struggles with scale and penetration, needing state and regional support due to competition with fossil fuels and material limits.

This thesis examines how political, societal, and market factors shape the biogas market, focusing on regional dynamics. A longitudinal case study reveals that successful regions rely on local resources and concerns, with local value creation playing a crucial role.

Omslag, dokotorsavhandling.
The biogas market's evolution highlights the socio-material interplay, especially with biofertilisers. The market remains dynamic, with shifting narratives influenced by external factors like fossil gas reliance and material changes.

This research underscores the need for adaptive strategies in both public and private sectors as the market develops.

Teaching

My teaching experience is rooted in sustainable urban planning and economic geography, where I have designed and led a wide range of courses and seminars across different academic cycles.

From foundational courses like "Introduction to GIS and Statistics" and "Introduction to Statistics for Planners" to more advanced subjects such as "Scientific Perspectives and Methods" and "Recent Trends in Planning – Data Visualization Lab," my goal has always been to integrate practical skills with critical thinking. I am passionate about preparing students to address the pressing environmental crises and societal transformations by fostering a sense of agency and responsibility.
