At LiU, there are two large national interdisciplinary ventures in this area: The strategic research area Security and Crisis Management, organised within Security Link and the Centre for Advanced Research in Emergency Response (CARER), a collaboration between LiU and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.

In 2012, the government made Security and Crisis Management into a strategic research area, located at LiU. The research is organised within Security Link, which consists of a consortium made up of LiU and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), together with complementary expertise from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Chalmers University of Technology.

Security Link covers the areas of wireless communication, advanced sensors and detectors, sensor and information fusion, decision-making support and coordination for crisis management, but also the related ethical issues. Security Link is led by Professor Fredrik Gustafsson.

CARER conducts research and education that deals with society's ability to respond in the event of accidents. This involves everything from everyday accidents, to extraordinary incidents at the local, national or global level. Research from areas such as economics and management, informatics, computer science, logistics, cognitive science, disaster medicine, traumatology, law, political science and gender studies is collected here. CARER is led by Associate Professor Sofie Pilemalm.
