The project develops and evaluates a digital teaching program to strengthen phonemic awareness – linking letters to sounds. In collaboration with Legilexi, research-based tools are made freely available to schools.

Our research project focuses on improving and developing teaching methods for phonemic awareness—the ability to connect letters with sounds, which is crucial for learning to read. The project targets young pupils at risk of reading difficulties and children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

What is the research about?

The aim is to develop, refine, and evaluate digital, intensive reading instruction programs focusing on phonemic awareness. These programs are designed to provide individualized support for students in grades 1 and 2 who are at risk of developing early reading difficulties, while also adapting these methods for whole-class instruction. In collaboration with the Legilexi platform, these methods will be made freely available to all schools in Sweden, with the potential to transform reading instruction nationally.

Why is this research important?

Literacy is a fundamental skill that affects all other learning and lifelong development. Students who do not receive adequate support at an early age risk falling permanently behind in their academic and social development. This project addresses this critical period with the goal of preventing reading difficulties before they become a major challenge throughout schooling.

How can the new knowledge be valuable?

By providing scientifically grounded and practically tested teaching methods, we offer teachers effective and free tools. This contributes not only to students’ academic success but also supports a more inclusive and adaptable educational environment. The knowledge from this project has the potential to make a lasting difference for thousands of students by improving their reading skills and thereby their life opportunities.

By making these research findings accessible to schools nationwide, we can ensure that every child—regardless of background or individual challenges—receives the support they need to succeed in their education.
