Pre-Conference activities for PhD students 23 and 24 September, 2025. They take place in Norrköping.

Two days prior to the WERA TASK FORCE Global Research in Extended Education conference, Linköping University offers a series of training activities for PhD candidates. Students in all stages of their doctoral education are invited.

The activities consist of a series of workshops and study visits. The training activities aim to cultivate new networks through exchange of international perspectives of Extended Education, which we hope will contribute to PhD students’ education and career development. In addition, the visits to institutions of Extended Education in Norrköping aim to provide an enhanced understanding of the Swedish context and promote cooperation among countries and Higher Education institutions.

PhD candidates who are employed by a university in an EU Member State or a third country associated to the Erasmus+ programme are eligible for Erasmus+ Staff mobility. This form of funding covers part of the travel costs to Sweden and the living expenses during the two days of training activities.

Programme

Tuesday 23 September 2025

09.30-10.00 Welcome and introduction

Welcome to participants and introduction for the day.

10.00-10.30 Coffee break

"Fika" provided by Linköping University.

10.30-12.00 World café: Locating your research in the field of Extended Education

The World Café is a workshop format where conversations have a starting point in questions. Participants gather in different constellations and discuss the questions, moving between several topics.

Through engaging in conversation about Extended Education in practice and in research in a friendly and casual atmosphere, the doctoral students will be able to get to know each other’s projects and national contexts. The format of the World Café allows for the exchange of ideas with a large number of people, as the constellations of participants change from question to question.

12.00-13.00 Lunch

A light lunch provided by Linköping University.

13.00-13.45 Seminar: Building connections

This seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences, as well as give and receive feedback on each other’s work. Matched in duos or trios, participants will be able to discuss different contexts of Extended Education or test something they are working on and get comments from peers in a short session.

Participants will be asked in advance which format of seminar they wish to take part in:

  1. Discussion based on a common text (book chapter or article);
  2. Comments on a short presentation by the participants (10 minutes),
  3. Comments on a short text (manuscript) written by the participants (1-2 pages).

Examples of work to be presented to peers are abstracts, short texts on concepts or excerpts from the dissertation, data, and presentation of the doctoral project.

13.45-14.15 Coffee break

"Fika" provided by Linköping University.

14.15-15.45 Discussion round: My first experiences

PhD candidates meet with researchers of different seniority levels to talk about their first experiences with important moments of doctoral education and early career, and how they worked towards their first achievements. This is an opportunity for exchanging knowledge and sharing lessons learned.

15.45-16.45 Workshop: Future research and collaboration in Extended Education

Participants will collectively create a panel about their views for future research in Extended Education and collaboration in the field. The workshop begins with questions about what participants wish to see in Extended Education research and how the WERA Task Force Global Research in Extended Education can help PhD students strengthen their network.

17.00 Social gathering

The gathering is not funded by Linköping University.

Wednesday 24 September 2025

10.00-10.45 Workshop: Extended Education continuums

In this activity, participants place a dot to represent their views on a continuum, a range between two ends. Different continuums related to discussions on Extended Education will be presented and participants will place a dot where they think the current state of research is. This activity provides a quick visualization of the participants’ views and of how perspectives are spread in the continuum, from which nuanced discussions can arise.
