Meet the frustrated optimist

Björn-Ola Linnér intended to be a social studies teacher. Instead, he became a climate researcher. He had never imagined an academic career. Yet, he became a professor at the Department of Thematic studies - Environmental Change in Linköping and, as a researcher, plays an active role in the environmental debate.

WISE

LiU is home to Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability – WISE. Sweden’s largest research programme in material science for a sustainable future. WISE is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

WASP - Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program

The fourth industrial revolution is upon us, as automation becomes autonomy. LiU conducts outstanding research in several of the fields that are central to the Wallenberg AI Autonomous Systems and Software Program, WASP.

Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine at LiU

WCMM at LiU focuses on the medicine-technology interface, and build upon our existing strengths in research within medical technology, materials science and bioengineering.

Advanced Functional Materials

Laboratory for Advanced Functional Materials, AFM, contributes at the highest level to the creation of knowledge. The work in highly competitive Centers of Excellence has been evaluated as excellent to outstanding by the VR, SSF, and Vinnova.

Strategic research areas

The strategic research areas (SRAs) are an initiative of the Swedish government to foster world-leading research in Sweden, in selected areas. Linköping University receives funding in five of the designated research areas, and in three of these Linköping University is the main applicant. In addition, LiU researchers participate actively in the fields of e-science and transport research.

IT and mobile communication

Traditional mobile telephony is changing towards systems and platforms with unimagined capacity. The aim of ELLIIT (Excellence Center at Linköping – Lund in Information Technology) is to meet these challenges in a broad and effective way.

Materials Science

We have a vision that application-inspired basic research focused on the design of new materials at the atomic/molecular scale will solve societal problems within energy, the environment, health and employment.

Security and emergency management

Our vision is to establish a world-leading platform for strategic interdisciplinary research in crisis management, security and the protection of public infrastructure.
