There is today a possibility to extend the research activities in planning and optimization of electric heavy-duty vehicles within the new competence center SEDDIT (https://liu.se/en/research/seddit). Therefore, we are now looking for a PhD student to the Division of Vehicular Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY).

Your work assignments

The problem considers real-time planning of electric heavy-duty vehicles utilizing sensor data from the vehicle fleet. Heavy-duty vehicles have become moving sensor platforms that can be used to monitor driving and traffic conditions. This type of information is useful to plan the routes of other vehicles in the fleet and where to charge. Even though all vehicles are connected, data transfer capabilities on the road limit how much data that can be shared between vehicles. Therefore, data must be processed on each vehicle to extract information that is relevant for other vehicles, but it is also important to determine what information that should be shared and when. The project is part of the Vinnova Competence Center SEDDIT and will contain both theoretical and application-oriented challenges and will be in close collaboration with our industrial partners.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or have completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in modeling and simulation, vehicular systems, and optimization. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time the employment decision is finalized, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.

For this position, special attention will be paid to the following competencies:

  • For the thesis work and PhD educational program relevant knowledge and abilities, for example demonstrated through good results on courses on modeling and simulation, signal processing, and optimization.
  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge from physical modeling, electric vehicles, optimization and signal processing, for example demonstrated by the MSc Thesis or experience from industry.
  • Ability to independent work and ability to formulate and address technological and scientific problems.
  • Good ability to both written and oral communication, including very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Your workplace

You will work in the Division of Vehicular Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University. The division conducts research as well as undergraduate and graduate education in autonomous systems, electrification, battery systems, diagnostics and prognostics, and modeling and control of vehicle functions. Within the area of electrification and electromobility, we are currently expanding both our research and undergraduate education. The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
