The etiology of many spinal deformities are complex or even unknown. Genetics, muskuloskeletal structural integrity, biomechanical factors and neuromuscular functional impairments may be causal factors for spinal deformity.

Clinical research focused on identifying factors in the patient history as well as medical and physical assessment parameters that are associated with the debut and natural progression of spinal deformities is of importance. With this improved knowledge more effective prevention strategies can be developed and implemented in health care.
