The aim of the study is to increase knowledge about interactions and mathematics teaching during the transition from student teacher to newly qualified teacher.

The study is based on the Teaching Through Interactions framework (TTI) and the structured observation method Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), which can be used as tools to analyze, understand, and develop teaching.

The overarching aim of the study is to increase knowledge about interactions and mathematics teaching during the transition from student teacher to newly qualified teacher. The study focuses on:

  • intentions behind mathematics teaching
  • quality of interactions during mathematics teaching
  • reflections on the role of teacher education

The study aims to analyze various aspects of mathematics teaching and how these areas vary over time. Student teachers will be followed from the end of their education through their first year of teaching.

The project has an approved ethical review.

Data is collected by semi-structured interviews and video-recorded mathematics lessons. The teaching is conducted as usual without extra planning or follow-up. Data collection began in spring 2025 and will continue with new interested student teachers until the end of spring 2026.
