Optimized Digitalization for Environmentally Neutral Industrialization - ODEN-AI

STILFOLD process
STILFOLD’s software design allows the creation of 3D shapes from 2D sheets by folding them along curved lines optimized for strength, material use, and sustainability.

The ODEN-AI project focuses on mobility and sustainability, raising the maturity level of AI within the mobility sector. It also develops AI tools for modeling and optimizing material behavior, which could potentially benefit several industries.

To promote sustainability in the automotive industry, it is crucial to explore environmentally friendly and economically viable manufacturing methods. The innovative company STILFOLD has developed an exciting new technology, which offers unparalleled flexibility with the potential to revolutionise product design and production. This folding technique, akin to metal origami, reduces the number of components and material usage. This saves on the cost of heavy equipment, simplifies production, increases recyclability, and reduces resource waste.

Automation is essential for process efficiency but requires support systems for robot programming, process parameter management, and precision control. Although STILFOLD’s manufacturing technology is simple and elegant, automation introduces significant complexity. Achieving automation necessitates detailed models and AI methods to analyse and optimise material behaviour, process parameters, machine interactions, and control strategies. To address this, ODEN-AI, through the integration of digital twin technology, reinforcement learning (RL), and detailed material models embedded in physics-informed neural networks (PINN), will deliver advanced computational tools to manage the complexity of automation and maximise the efficiency of the folding technique.
