We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here.

The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level, the department is responsible for most of the medical program, the speech and language pathology program and the biomedical program.

For more information about the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, please follow: BKV.

We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

Your task as a PhD student will be to conduct cutting-edge research in protein biology as part of the project “Proteomic characterisation of oncogenic forkhead box transcription factors in cancer”, under the guidance of Associate Professor Stefan Koch (see here for an overview of our work on this topic). In this project, we aim to determine how forkhead box proteins contribute to the development and progression of cancers, and to find protein targets for the development of new treatments for cancer.

In pursuit of these goals, you will study interaction partners of forkhead box proteins by using state-of-the-art proximity proteomics, and collaborate with the SciLifeLab national research infrastructure to develop and test proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTAC) against forkhead box proteins and their interactors (see https://www.scilifelab.se/units/hit2lead/). On top of these assignments, you are expected to present your work at local seminars and international conferences, and to contribute to shared tasks in the laboratory.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Cell Biology (or relevant related fields such as Molecular Oncology or Biomedicine), or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses related to Cell and Molecular Biology. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

You should have extensive working experience in standard molecular biology techniques and cell culture. Additional project-related skills, such as mass spectrometry-based proteomics and high-throughput data analysis in R or Python, are meriting for this position.

The working language in the group is English, so you need to be proficient in communicating in English in both speaking and writing.

The ideal candidate should be:
- self-motivated and proactive in achieving their goals
- curious and interested in science beyond their own project
- a diligent researcher who keeps organised records of their work

Please include a letter of motivation in your application, in which you outline why you want to pursue a PhD, and what makes you a competitive candidate for this position.

Your workplace

You will be working in the laboratory of Stefan Koch within the Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology (MMV) and the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Linköping University. The Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within molecular biology related to human pathology.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date is set by agreement.
