A course for professionals that need to improve their competence in the Semantic Web area, in particular regarding technologies connected to Knowledge Graphs, such as Linked Data technologies and ontologies.

Target group

The course is designed for professionals within systems development or R&D, including project managers or similar roles. Prerequisites is some basic knowledge of data modelling and a basic understanding of programming (any programming language).

About the course

Course content

After attending the course you will have learned:

  • to understand and explain the basic ideas of Knowledge Graphs and the Semantic Web, including Linked Data and ontologies, and related standards (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, SHACL, etc.)
  • the differences between on one hand tabular data and the relational model, and graph data models on the other hand. Additionally, be aware of the commonalities and differences between property graphs, standard RDF, and RDF-star.
  • to understand, use and query basic RDF datasets (using SPARQL), on the Web as well as loaded in a triple store.
  • to use ontology engineering tools to understand, use and modify basic RDFS/OWL ontologies, and be aware of the relation between terminologies, taxonomies, and ontologies, and typical usage scenarios.
  • to understand and use basic SHACL models for data validation and constraint checking over a given RDF dataset.
  • how applications based on Semantic Web technologies are commonly using RDF data, OWL ontologies, etc.

Teaching and working methods

The course can, as a suggestion, consists of two days of lectures and hands-on sessions. In the hands-on sessions the participants will work on exercises using their own laptops. Teachers will be present in each hands-on session to help out with exercises and discuss problems and questions. Each day ends with a discussion session where general questions and thoughts can be discussed, and feedback can be given to the teachers. Teaching language is English, but questions and discussions can also be done in Swedish. The course is designed for on-site teaching but it can also be done as an online course.

A tailored education can be conducted at LiU's premises, at your organization, or online. You can also choose whether the course should include examination with attainment of university credits.
