Different market products give very different results when it comes to liberating the antioxidant lutein from spinach in smoothies, according to a study from LiU. Of 14 common dairy and plant-based products, only four increased lutein liberation.
Nine researchers at LiU have received research funding from the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation. The funded research will include work on the immune system in heart disease, the development of new drugs, and the effects of remote yoga on heart failure.
Fourteen researchers at LiU have received grants totalling more than SEK 64 million. This is the result when the Swedish Research Council has awarded nearly SEK 1.1 billion in research grants for the medical and health sciences.
Eat your spinach in the form of a smoothie or juice – this is the best way to obtain the antioxidant lutein. High levels of lutein are found in dark green vegetables, and researchers at LiU have compared different ways of preparing fresh spinach in order to maximise the levels of lutein in finished food.
Several highly coloured vegetables and fruits contain lutein. A study by researchers at LiU suggests that lutein has anti-inflammatory effects in patients with coronary artery disease.
We want to understand why the immune system isn’t balanced in many with coronary heart disease to be able to tailor the treatment of the cause of the disease, rather than the symptoms.
CircM is a strategic research network for researchers at Linköping University and Region Östergötland within the research field circulation and cardio-metabolic risk factors.
The cardiovascular system is a fascinating organ system whose task is to supply all the body’s organs with oxygen and nutrients, as well as carrying away waste products.
Research in the field of inflammation stretches over a broad area. Important areas are vaccines and human genetic factors in virus infections, resistance to antibiotics, tick-borne infections, and the role of inflammation in cardiovascular disease.
