Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all children and young people have the right to be included in decisions that affect them. The handbook provides guidance and tips on how professionals can involve children and young people in their work.

Over the shoulder perspective of a girl holding a handbook.

Since 2019, Barnafrid has been working to find ways to include and involve children and young people. A part of Barnafrid's mission is to make the views and experiences of children and young people visible. One way this has been done is to start youth councils where young people are invited to talk and discuss various topics and issues together. To be able to work with children and young people, an organisation needs to have the right conditions, which the handbook helps to provide. It’s based on Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and builds on Barnafrid's experience of working with children and young people in workshops.

The handbook is aimed at professionals who, in their work, meet children or young people or aim to start working with children and young people to increase their participation.

Participation and inclusion in three parts

Cover of the handbook Children's and young people's voices.

The handbook is based on a model developed by Laura Korhonen and Erica Mattelin at Barnafrid, which describes how to include children and young people in your work in three parts: preparation, implementation and feedback. Each part contains concrete tips, guidance and important things to consider.

The English translation of the handbook is available on Barnafrid's knowledge portal.
