InterGender – International Consortium for Interdisciplinary Feminist Research Training

Abstract reflections of grass

InterGender is an international consortium dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary feminist research training.

The purpose of InterGender is to enhance the quality, accessibility, and recognition of interdisciplinary feminist research training on a global scale. We aim to complement and strengthen local research training provided by our partner institutions. To achieve this, we set out to:

  • Foster continuous scholarly reflection and the development of cutting-edge training within interdisciplinary feminist research.
  • Operate an international office that serves as a hub for our partner units, all of which focus on interdisciplinary feminist studies.
  • Provide a comprehensive joint program of research training activities.

What we offer

InterGender offers a dynamic array of research training activities and courses designed to meet the evolving needs of first-, mid- and last-phase PhD students, advanced MA students, and academics in the field of gender studies. InterGender is organised to ensure the quality of the research performed by the students, as well as the development of the training programme they undergo.

Our offerings include:

  • InterGender courses: We conduct at least one major course annually, alternating between key themes in Gender Studies Theories and Methodologies. These courses are held at Linköping University or other partner institutions.
  • Networking seminars: Annual events designed to facilitate connections and collaborations among PhD candidates and advanced MA students within our consortium.
  • Workshops for supervisors and lecturers: These workshops promote dialogue, reflection, and the sharing of best practices among educators from our partner units.

Background

Established in 2015, InterGender evolved from the success of the Swedish-International Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, which was funded by the Swedish Research Council from 2008 to 2014. Our consortium draws from a rich heritage, including the Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (NorsGender) and the influential Athena Network, both of which significantly shaped our approach and vision.

Colloquia

InterGender Colloquia Guidelines

What is a Colloquium?

As a PhD candidate you can decide how to use the colloquium and what to do with the time and space. Think about what you and your peers might benefit from. Here are some examples:

  • Community building process
  • Discuss your active research
  • Struggles PhD students face
  • Learning space
  • Reading together/Guided reading
  • Guest lectures
  • Mock defenses
  • Colloqium series on one topical area
  • Work in pairs! – PhD students can also work in teams to host one of the colloquia

Time and space:

  • As a “host” the PhD student can decide to do the colloquium online or in hybrid format
  • The time and date as well as length can be determined by the PhD candidate themselves

Prior Registration:

  • Host decides

Funding:

  • There is no funding available through InterGender – however, if you would like to invite an expert to a colloquium there might be possibilities in your home institution for covering the costs

What to do if I want to organize a colloquium:

Twice a year all students will have an opportunity to pitch their colloquium ideas. First opportunity before IRL InterGender Board Meeting in the spring. Second opportunity before the cohort meeting in the fall. If you are interested in organizing a colloquium please fill in the template, and send as a pdf to Edyta Just (edyta.just[at]liu.se). Your pitch will be presented respectively at the IG Board meeting or at the Cohort meeting and added to the calendar.

For 2025 the deadlines to send the pitches are: 27 April 2025 and 21 September 2025.
