Linköping University climbs almost 200 places to reach position 156 in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026. The ranking measures how higher education institutions around the world contribute to sustainability and is among the most significant globally.

The QS ranking considers both environmental and social impact. A wide range of factors are assessed, from environmental projects on campus to research linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as how the university operates as an organisation.

Among the world leaders in environmental research

Linköping University’s strongest area in the ranking is environmental research, where LiU is ranked 25th in the world.

The British QS ranking is considered one of the world’s most influential university rankings. Each year, it presents an overall ranking of the world’s higher education institutions. This year, LiU was ranked 310th, placing the university among the top two per cent in the world.

The QS sustainability ranking has been published since 2022 and includes around 2,000 higher education institutions in 100 countries. At the top of the global list is Lund University.

Strong subjects in subject ranking

Another of the three most influential university rankings – the Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai Ranking – has published new results in its annual subject ranking. Here, LiU is ranked 100th in the subject of metallurgical engineering and is among the top 200 in the world in a further eight subjects: electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunication engineering, materials science and engineering, energy science and engineering, artificial intelligence, veterinary sciences, nursing and sociology.
