Uppskattningsvis 15 miljoner människor i Europa är drabbade av hjärtsvikt, en siffra som ökar på grund av en åldrande befolkning och förbättrad behandling vid akuta hjärttillstånd. Hjärtsvikt är förknippat med återkommande sjukhusinläggningar, akutvårdsbesök och låg livskvalitet men god egenvård har visat sig förbättra patienternas utsikter.

Egenvård vid hjärtsvikt avser beteenden eller åtgärder som patienten själv utför med syfte att öka livslängd, hälsa och välbefinnande. Det kan handla om kost och motion, om patientens förmåga att hantera sin situation och sjukdom samt följsamhet till läkemedelsordinationer, men också om daglig viktkontroll för att förebygga vätskeretention, och att kontakta sjukvården om symptom uppstår.

För att kunna utvärdera interventionerna för egenvården är det viktigt att kartlägga patienternas egenvård och på vilket sätt de ändrat sitt beteende till följd av interventionerna. Kartläggningen kan också hjälpa vårdpersonalen att sätta in stöd och handledning där behov finns.

Som stöd för utvärderingen har vi utvecklat en användarvänlig och validerad skala; European Heart Failure Self-care Behaviour Scale, EHFScB-skalan (eller ”Egenvård vid hjärtsvikt” i den svenska översättningen).

EHFScB-skalan publicerades 2003 och består av olika påståenden (items) där patienten kan markera sitt svar på en femgradig skala, från ”Stämmer precis” till ”Stämmer inte alls”. EHFScB-skalan är idag översatt till en rad språk och finns (i vissa översättningar) i två versioner med nio respektive tolv påståenden.
