Graduate school in subject didactics

The graduate school creates a sustainable and innovative research framework for teacher education programs where research training environments collaborate on subject didactics from various subject areas.

At Linköping University (LiU), there are currently six research training programs with a focus on subject didactics. The graduate school will bring these together and create a sustainable and innovative research framework for teacher education programs where research training environments collaborate on subject didactics from various subject areas.

The graduate school contributes to the expansion of research and research training in connection with teacher education. Linköping University has the country's broadest range of teacher education programs. A variety of subjects contribute efforts to make this possible, but it also presents a challenge in achieving a research connection for all these subjects – especially when it comes to subject didactics research. Subject didactics research contributes to professional education being based on systematic, reflected, and current knowledge about teaching and learning in subjects.

The subject didactics research already conducted at LiU, and the expertise possessed by qualified subject didactics personnel, can be described as broad.

Activities and courses

The graduate school organizes annual retreats and runs a subject didactics seminar series. Within the framework of the graduate school, PhD students will be offered both international and national networking opportunities.

Regarding courses, the graduate school's courses are coordinated with the mandatory courses of each respective research training subject. Five common courses are offered:

  • Basic course in subject didactics
  • Advanced course in subject didactics
  • Methodology course in subject didactics
  • General course in research ethics
  • Course in research ethics focused on subject didactics

The purposes of the subject didactics courses are to create a common conceptual and theoretical framework for discussions on subject didactics, as well as to understand the differences and similarities between various subject didactics research traditions. The purpose of the research ethics courses is to provide PhD students with a solid foundation for handling research ethics issues, including ethical review, in their research projects.
