About AFM

Under the AFM umbrella, researchers from the divisions of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (IFM), Science and Engineering (ITN), as well as Management and Engineering (IEI) at Linköping University are included.

A steering group is appointed by the Vice Chancellor and it is tasked to plan, manage and make decisions. The steering group also makes decisions on how AFM will finance research projects.

In total, around 250 researchers are involved in projects fully or partially funded by AFM. The projects and the investigators that run them are the core of AFM.

To ensure the growth of the next generation of materials researchers, AFM also invests money in the Agora Materiae research school. The school has been active since 2012 and aims to support doctoral students in the research area of new functional materials.

Professor Igor Abrikosov focuses on theoretical simulations aimed at deepening the fundamental understanding of material properties. By starting from the basic principles of quantum mechanics, he strives to transfer this knowledge to areas such as applied materials science, related scientific fields, and industry.

Igor's research covers a wide range of fundamental problems in theoretical condensed matter physics. For Igor, it is important that everyone contributes and is rewarded to create a good working environment and a successful group.

In an environment with such high competition, like research, it's crucial to foster a good collaborative climate within one's group. In a climate of collaboration, better results can be achieved collectively than what could be achieved individually.
